- Cottonwood Paper Mill - 6900 S Big Cottonwood Canyon Rd, Cottonwood Heights, UT
The film opens with Jamie giving birth and her subsequent escape from the depths of Smiths Grove Sanitarium. These scenes were filmed in the tunnels of the Central Valley Water Reclamation Facility, with the exception of the stone walled room where Jamie gives birth, which was filmed at the old and now abandoned Cottonwood Paper Mill.
The newly shot footage of Michael being kidnapped from the police station in the Producer's cut flashback was filmed out front of the now demolished Primary Children's Hospital, which would appear later in the film under a different guise. It was not possible for the production to reuse the police station from Halloween 5, as the building had been demolished in the time since 1989.
When Jamie reaches the surface the location switches to the grounds of the Gadsby Power Plant. She emerges amongst the now non-existant oil storage tanks at 40.769672, -111.926239, before heading South to climb a set of stairs that have also been removed. After ducking through a fence she then runs across the Jordan River rail bridge at 40.769477, -111.925947 and finds the truck parked next to the Salt Lake Garfield & Western train shed.
The entrance to Loomis' house is located on the south east side of the building at 40.626951, -111.799739. The interiors were filmed in a small room on the top floor of the building, located directly above the aforementioned entrance. In reality the door that Loomis opens does not lead outside but to the balcony area above where the ritual would take place later in the film (see further down).
Trivia: This room also makes an appearance in SLC Punk! (1998)

The Haddonfield bus depot is actually the terminal building of Ogden-Hinckley Airport, which has been heavily renovated since 1994 but it's still easily recognisable. Other changes include the addition of an awning at the main entrance and an extension to the left side of the building, which has opened up the area beside the women's restroom entrance. The restrooms themselves have also been renovated and remodelled, with the stalls being moved from the bottom of the stairs to a separate area at the side.

After escaping the bus depot Jamie is pursued by The Shape along a stretch of road that I have not yet identified. If anyone knows where this is then please let me know and full credit will be awarded.
After Jamie is forced off the road she crashes into this farm and ultimately suffers a different fate depending on the cut you watch. In the Producer's cut she is stabbed by The Shape but survives, and this was filmed in the barn at this location. The entire scene (aside from her entering the barn) was then reshot on a Los Angeles sound stage in July/August 1995 for the Theatrical cut, with The Shape now impaling her on a tiller.

- Primary Children's Hospital - 320 12th Ave, Salt Lake City, UT
- The Dream Center - 2301 Bellevue Ave, Los Angeles, CA
I believe the scenes in Wynn's office were filmed at the former Primary Children's Hospital on 12th Avenue, which had already closed in 1990. The building was then demolished between 1995 and 1996 and replaced with new housing. Part of confrontation between Wynn and Loomis near the end of the film (aside from Donald's dialogue scenes) was reshot at the Los Angeles Dream Center in July/August 1995 for the Theatrical cut.
Whilst not an exact match for the original house this is a definite improvement on the Victorian style mansion from Halloween 5. As part of some changes that were made for filming a plastic sheet was used to cover up half of Kara's bedroom window so that it matched the window at the interior location.

The Strode house interiors (with the exception of the basement area) were filmed in Building #604 at 105 South Fort Douglas Boulevard, which is now known as the Pierre Lassonde House. At the time of filming the house had been vacant for about 40 years, having formerly served as officers quarters. In 2008 the building was heavily renovated and remodelled into executive offices and is now unrecognisable in comparison. The main living room is now the North Parlour and the attached dining room has been removed completely, along with the kitchen walls to form a hallway beside the Board Room. Danny's bedroom is located at the front of the house (with the double windows), and Kara's is adjacent to it on the side (also with double windows but one was covered up for filming).
The basement was the only area not to be filmed at the Fort Douglas location, but in the same house on Lincoln Street that was used as the exterior. Part of the basement was then recreated on a Los Angeles sound stage in July/August 1995 to re-shoot John Strode's death for the Theatrical version.
Trivia: The Fort Douglas house also makes an appearance in SLC Punk! (1998)
Located directly across the street from the Strode house is the Blankenship house. The interiors were also filmed here with the exception of Tommy Doyle's bedroom, which was located at the front of the 'Strode house' and is Kara's bedroom in the film. To ensure that this room matched the exterior of the Blankenship house part of the window was covered up with a false wall, which was also cut to give the appearance of an A-Frame roof.
The Haddonfiled Junior College is actually the home of the Ogden School District and Special Education Unit. In the film we first see the trio pulling into the parking lot at the corner of 20th Street and Monroe Boulevard. From there they walk up the small grass hill just in front of it, where Kara drops her books. In the Producer's cut the scene continues with her walking to the area at 41.232333, -111.958106, where we see The Shape step into frame. The school then reappears later in the film with the Halloween fair taking place in the area at 41.231830, -111.958009.

Danny's walk home begins with him heading North on Lincoln Street from its intersection with South Hollywood Avenue. He is then passed by the WKNB van in front of 1942 Lincoln Street, which makes a left turn onto Ramona Avenue, revealing the Man in Black who is standing at the same corner. Danny is then startled by Tommy and drops his pumpkin.

Some or probably all of the Haddonfield Memorial Hospital interiors were filmed at the Primary Children's Hospital on 12th Avenue, which had closed in 1990 and was subsequently demolished between 1995 and 1996 to make way for new housing. I know for certain that Tommy's arrival through the emergency entrance (located at the rear of the hospital) and his subsequent conversation with Loomis were both filmed at this location. I can't confirm it but it's highly likely that Jamie's death (in the Producer's cut) and the conversation between Loomis, Wynn and Dr. Bonham were also filmed here.
Trivia: This hospital also makes an appearance in Heaven Sent (1994)
In the Producer's cut this building is the exterior of Smith's Grove Sanitarium. This was also the exterior of Ridgemont Sanitarium in Halloween 4.
The building began life as a Veterans Administration Hospital in 1932, serving the community until its closure in 1962. It was then purchased by the LDS Church and functioned as an annex to its 12th Avenue Primary Children's Hospital until 1990 (also a location used in this film). The building then remained vacant until 2007 when a project began to convert the old hospital into the Meridien condominiums.

The Smith's Grove employees entrance is located on the West side of the Mill at 40.626866, -111.799993.

- George E. Wahlen VA Medical Center - 500 Foothill Dr, Salt Lake City, UT
- Central Valley Water - 800 W Central Valley Rd, South Salt Lake, UT
- Cottonwood Paper Mill - 6900 S Big Cottonwood Canyon Rd, Cottonwood Heights, UT
In the Producer's cut the finale at Smith's Grove Sanitarium is split between three locations:
1) The George E. Wahlen VA Medical Center is the location of the sanitarium's long white hallways, which are the tunnels that connect the buildings of this facility. When Tommy and Loomis first arrive they emerge from an area between 'Building 3' and 'Building 4'. Tommy then spots and follows a cult member from this area to the intersection of 'Building 4'. He then exits the elevator of 'Building 5' and follows the cult member along the tunnel towards 'Building 1'. After escaping the ritual Tommy, Kara and Danny appear at the intersection of 'Building 4' and take a right towards 'Building 1', before taking a left and heading towards 'Building 5' where the security gate is.

2) The Central Valley Water Reclamation Facility was the location of the basement area with the dark tunnels, which is only seen briefly in the finale with Tommy following the cult member and also for a few shots when Tommy, Kara and Danny are escaping. The location is seen more heavily at the beginning of the film with Jamie's escape from Smith's Grove.
NOTE: These are not screen matching photos.
3) The Cottonwood Paper Mill was the location of the ritual, which takes place in the west part of the building at 40.627010, -111.799926. The exact area is on the middle floor, with the ceremony taking place at the north end of the room and the stairs that Tommy, Kara and Danny use to escape being located at the other end.
The building itself was constructed in 1883 and operated as a paper mill until 1893 when it suffered heavy fire damage. The structure was partially rebuilt in 1927 for use as an open-air dance hall known as the Old Mill Club, serving patrons until the 1940s. In the late 1960's the building hosted rock concerts on Friday and Saturday nights and was also used as a haunted house and a craft boutique in the 1970's and 1980's. The building was then condemned by the city of Cottonwood Heights in 2005 and has remained abandoned ever since. The area is now surrounded by a fence and a hefty fine awaits those who are caught trespassing.

With test audiences not favouring the original cut of the film the studio ordered re-shoots in an attempt to improve the film's final act (and to increase the gore in other areas). These re-shoots would take place in July and August of 1995 at the vacant Queen of Angels Hospital in Los Angeles, which is now the home of a Christian non-profit organisation known as the Dream Center.
The exterior shot of Smith's Grove was filmed on the West side of the building at 34.075062, -118.270308. The scenes in and around the Operating Room appear to have been filmed on the building's 12th floor. One hallway was set dressed with a security gate, lights and a dead end sign to match an area from the original shoot. Other filming took place in the basement where Shape actor Michael Lerner peruses his real life father (playing a doctor) through a tunnel.

Do you know if the Loomis house at the mill was an actual residence at one time, or was that stuff left by the production company? Namely the bar area.
ReplyDeleteAs far as I know it was never a residence, but someone could correct me there. However, I do know that at one time it was a dance hall and also hosted rock concerts, so it's certainly plausible that this area was used as a bar. I'm certain that the production will have heavily set dressed the room though.
DeleteThis movie gets a ton of hate but I really enjoyed it! Plus it absolutely nailed the feeling of fall! Wasn't crazy about the ending. But losing Donald Pleasance during shooting didn't help their cause. Excellent job on the photos!
ReplyDeleteI'm also a big fan of this entry, despite some of the major flaws in both cuts. I think it has the best atmosphere in the series (along with part 4), which in my opinion is something that the newer films just can't seem to get right.
